Photo: Aru village in DRC at dusk

I was in Aru, a small yet buzzing village in Province Orientale in Democratic Republic of Congo near the Sudan border, in order to train agronomists in giving better plant health advice to farmers in the surrounding areas. The people are adorable and made me feel very welcome and safe. The outskirts are always lively in the evening, particularly after the rains and during Easter Sunday. Here I was just ambling along the main road near my hotel, and the colours and vibes were very relaxing. I later in the evening watched, filmed and eventually participated in a Michael Jackson tribute dance to Smooth Criminal...!

Photo: a full moon in a game reserve in Kenya

At a workshop in Naivasha, next to Nakuru game reserve in central Kenya, we visited a small nature reserve near a lodge. Luckily we spotted a few animals before the sun set, and then we walked through the park at night. It was a beautiful evening with eerie moonshine. Realkly recommend going through that part of Kenya though. Slightly less touristy than the major game reserves in East Africa.

At a workshop in Naivasha, next to Nakuru game reserve in central Kenya, we visited a park in one of the main lodges in the area at sunset. Luckily we spotted a few animals before it got dark, and then we walked through the park at night. It was a beautiful evening with eerie moonshine, almost as nice as seeing the wild (ish) animals. A memorable moment. Really recommend going through that part of Kenya. Slightly less touristy than the major game reserves in East Africa.

Photo: a really cool grasshopper on cassava in DR Congo

grasshopper; insect; cassava pests; Congo; Africa

While I was out doing an agronomist training course in DRC, I came across this amazing grasshopper sitting on a cassava leaf. They are considered a pest on cassava and can destroy a whole crop if they are left alone. As bad as they are to the farmers, these insects are pretty spectacular to look at!

Photo: Somewhere, everything is illuminated

In Kitale, where I was staying as of two days, I had a wonderful view of Mout Elgon, a very old mountain that is dwarfed in size by Kilimanjaro, but certainly not by charm and beauty. Hope this picture brings you a bit of sunshine wherever you may be

In Kitale, where I was staying in western Kenya, I had a wonderful view of Mount Elgon, a very old mountain that is dwarfed in size by Kilimanjaro, but certainly not in charm and beauty. Have a look at the sun shining on its blueish eastern face. I love the fact that the sky was so grey and wet and windy, but just in that particular spot on the mountain, everything was illuminated… Hope this picture brings you a bit of sunshine wherever you may be

Photo: Kids in the rain in Kenya

Took this picture while waiting for a rainshower to stop!

Wondering around the area of Kitale in Western Kenya, we came across a school lunch hour when we were actually doing some field work. The kids came out in droves and ducked for shelter during a heavy rain spell. We were in our vehicle and the rain just kept falling… Hope you like the picture. Over the course of the two days, we saw 1500 farmers and gave out vital information about a particularly nasty disease in Kenya on maize: Maize Lethal Necrosis Disease (sounds bad as well!)
